Michael K. Smolek PhD, FARVO Director of Research
BIOSKETCH
Michael K. Smolek, Ph.D., FARVO is the Founding Director of Research and Managing Director of the CLEVER Eye Institute and the Louisiana Eye Research Institute (LERI). He earned his PhD in physiological optics at Indiana University in 1986. During post-graduate training, he completed two NIH Research Fellowships at Emory University Eye Center (1987-88) and at the LSU Eye Center of Excellence (1991-92). He retired as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in 2011 from the LSUHSC Department of Ophthalmology in New Orleans. He is a Silver Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and a past ARVO Cornea Section Chairman. He is on the editorial board of several international research journals. Dr. Smolek is well known for work in computer-aided diagnostics algorithms and clinical screening standards in ophthalmology.
